Two of the DeVaux Barn's Best Breeze Over Keeneland's Lexington Oval
Keeneland's morning watchers were given something worth the early rise this week, as two of the finest horses in trainer DeVaux's care went to the track for timed work over the Lexington course. One was Golden Tempo, the Curlin colt who carried the colors of Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stables to victory in both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes. The other was Englishman, a son of Maxfield owned by C R K Stable, who has already taken two races at the top level of the American calendar. That a single conditioner sends out a Derby and Belmont winner and a two-time top-flight scorer on the same morning, over the same ground, is the sort of thing Kentucky horsemen notice and remember. For those lucky enough to be railside with a coffee, it was a glimpse of racing's best at their most unhurried, going about the quiet daily business that long precedes the roar of an afternoon crowd.
