GM's New 8.3-Liter Duramax Sets the Diesel Class Benchmark at 555 Horsepower and 1,230 lb-ft
General Motors' newest Duramax diesel, an 8.3-liter engine, arrives rated at 555 horsepower and 1,230 lb-ft of torque. On those two figures, it stands ahead of every other diesel in its class. The number a buyer at the order desk may weigh more heavily is a third one. Stepping from the standard gasoline engine up to this diesel costs less than the equivalent step costs at Ford or at Ram. That is a rare combination for an American truck owner to find on a single build sheet: the largest output in the field, paired with the smallest premium to get it. The displacement alone, 8.3 liters, is the sort of figure owners will quote to one another on a show field.
