The American SetThe Prado Comes to Brooklyn, Five Pictures at a Time
New York has a new way into the Spanish national collection, and the route goes through Brooklyn. "Masterpieces," a virtual reality program built on paintings from the Prado, has an opening date of October 1 at Powerhouse Arts. The selection is tight: five canvases, each among the best-known works the museum owns. With only five, the program is less a survey of the collection than a close look at a few pictures. For a city that measures its art life in auction previews and gallery openings, this is a different kind of viewing, with famous works seen through a headset instead of across a gallery floor. It is the Prado's own collection, shown in a Brooklyn arts building.
