Cindy Sherman Dresses in Cloth That Was Never Cut
Cindy Sherman has made herself the figure at the center of a new magazine devoted to art and culture, produced with the Chanel Culture Fund. For the project she swathed her own body in lengths of the house's material, some of it never stitched into a garment, some of it drawn from the Chanel archive. The effect is fabric worn as fabric, the bolt standing in for the finished dress, with the artist underneath it. The publication comes ahead of a Sherman exhibition at Hauser & Wirth. For anyone who follows her work, it is a look at what the raw material does when the maker is also the model.
