A New Gallery and Mastrangelo's Cast Pieces Anchor October's Design Calendar
Galerie has drawn up a list of nine collectible design exhibitions worth seeing this month. Two of them stand out for anyone who buys furniture the way others buy paintings. Fernando Mastrangelo is showing cast furnishings whose forms are taken from maps of disputed borders, pieces that hold the eye longer the closer one stands. The other is a group show at Sarah Sherman Samuel's newly opened gallery, which gathers work by makers from the Midwest. For a collector, the pairing is instructive: one show rests on a single artist's command of material, the other on a region's workshops and the hands in them. The remaining seven round out a month when the trade's attention turns to what is new on the gallery floor and what will soon change hands.
