Idaho's 1948 Answer to Its Beaver Problem Came Down by Parachute

· 1 min read

In 1948, Idaho's Department of Fish and Game took beavers out of the state's growing settled areas and dropped them by parachute into the backcountry. In the years after the war, new building had pushed people and beavers into the same places, and the agency had to deal with animals living close to town. Its answer was to move them to wild country where they could live on their own, and to get them there from the air. It is a piece of American history worth keeping: a state agency that found a careful and inventive way to give a native animal room to live.
