A Hudson Yards Storefront That Reads Like a Residence
Costa Brazil has opened a new flagship at Hudson Yards, and Francisco Costa designed it to feel less like a store and more like a room someone lives in. He filled the space with things he keeps for himself: shelves of books, objects he has chosen, and references to Brazil. A visitor gets the sense of being let into the designer's own rooms rather than walked through a retail floor. That matters on the far West Side of Manhattan, where newly built space usually arrives finished and anonymous. Here the shop is meant to be read slowly, the way you would look around a friend's living room, one shelf and one object at a time. For a desk that covers the American house, it is worth noting when a commercial address in New York is arranged on the logic of a home and is plainly the work of one person's taste.
