The Opry Turns a Year Older, and Nashville Is the Only Place It Could Have Done It
The Grand Ole Opry marked its birthday with a weekend of observance last weekend, a milestone for the program that remains the best-known stage in country music. For a city that measures its calendar in showcases, award nights, and writers' rounds, this one is different: it belongs to no label and no single star, only to the town itself. The industry that works out of Green Hills and the families who have been in Belle Meade for generations tend to agree on very little, but the Opry is a point on which both sides nod.
